She is still lethargic, but starting to smile and talk some.

Still no appetite, though! She is now off of Oxygen, and no longer vomiting or fever. She ate a couple bites of mashed potatoes, but that's about all.

Daddy's precious little one! Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for Em. God is answering, and we know that He will heal her. Thank you for continued prayers. Blessings always!

GK weekend

As most of you already know, our little grand-daughter Emily got very sick this past week. She was hospitalized on Thursday, so after work on Friday, we headed out to help with childcare. Since mommy and daddy were staying 24/7 with Em at the hospital, K packed her little basket and came with Nana for "overnight" at Uncle Jamie and Auntie Krista's house!

Mealtimes proved to be rather interesting...I can't remember what they were pretending to do

...but all three of them really got into the act, including little copy-cat brother!

Later, all three got to choose a video and watch together. Pretty intense Thomas the Train episode!

On Saturday morning, everyone was up bright and early! First some snuggle time with Jamie.

And a bit of clowning around...

Then K's mommy stopped by on her way to the hospital to visit a bit before spending the day with Em.

Later in the evening, daddy came by for supper and also shared some videos of
Em. Big sister was so happy to see her again!

Actually, all of us were thrilled to see the videos of that sweet little face, trying so hard to smile and be brave!

Sunday morning was rather interesting...all three kids woke up a bit crabby, but we were able to get all of us ready in time to be out the door and on time for church. K even consented to letting Auntie Krista fix her hair! Everyone had a great morning at church, and then we headed home for something to eat and some naps. Soon the big anticipation was finally over--it was time for K's birthday party celebration! (next post)

An Event-Filled Weekend

After working really hard on Saturday morning, we took the rest of the day off to be with friends and family members. On our way to Pasadena, we stopped by to visit some dear friends. We began with a family Communion service. It was such a blessing to partake together around the Table of the Lord, and especially meaningful to know that our dear brother Steve will soon be basking in the presence of Jesus. Just after Jim's closing prayer, Karen turned up the i-pod next to Steve's bed and we all listened in amazement to the words from the hymn "How Great Thou Art." Such a fitting benediction to our family service!

We were treated to a delicious meal and a great time of visiting together.

Our families share memories of many years together.

We also indulged in this delectable chocolate creation. Yum!

Thanks for a fun afternoon together.

Next we headed to Pasadena to spend time with Jim's cousin and her husband. After a delicious supper, we attended a lecture and Q&A by author Patrick Johnston, presenting his newly released book. Never in my life did I imagine that I would be captivated by endless stats, and how they relate to evangelism! The work that this man has done is incredible.

And the highlight of the evening was that Jim won a book! So he and Chuck were the first to stand in line and have the author sign their copies. Congrats, Jim! And thanks to Chuck and Penny for inviting us to this event and hosting us for the evening.

On Sunday evening, we had a lovely visit from another of Jim's cousins, who had been vacationing here in the area the past week. We enjoyed warm fellowship together, in spite of the cool and rainy weather outdoors. Thanks for stopping by, June and Joel!

I'm really behind with posting, please forgive. On New Year's weekend, we helped to celebrate two birthdays in our family which actually occur only 2 days apart: Bec and Jamie. K decided that she needed to make a cake for the party, but had difficulty getting it out of the pan, so mommy helped her put the chunks of cake on a plate and then she decorated it with frosting! After all, it's the thought that counts!

This little princess was all set for the special celebration.

We celebrated our family Christmas on Monday, the 26th. Both of our boys (that live here) and their families were here, so lots of fun and games!

We found this little bike on a garage sale, and Jayden was thrilled to ride it!

The older two decided they needed some "quiet time" so watched a bit of Curious George.

But this little boy was so tired, he just laid down and fell asleep in the chair!

So the family pic moved over to the rocking chair and sleeping boy!

Later that evening, we were so excited to have a visit from some very dear friends. Jim has known this lady and her family since he was a boy in Africa. Alice and her husband were such gracious hosts to our sons while they attended high school in Minnesota, while we were still living in Africa. What a thrill for her to now meet the boys' families.

We were happy to share this delectable french Christmas gateau with our guests.

Christmas Eve and Day

Since the holiday was on a weekend this year, we were pretty much confined to our home because of Jim's work. But we were delighted when B showed up with the little girls (M was working until Sunday evening).

This year was even more fun than last year because we could see the excietment in those little eyes...

We just enjoyed a nice quiet evening together, playing and visiting...

and reading stories. The next day we went to church for the morning service, came back home and enjoyed a delicious beef roast meal, then took some time for naps and siesta.

With the temp around 75, we decided to take a walk to a nearby park and play!

Plenty of fun to keep us all happy!

Mom not only had her hands full, but also her lap!

This happy face summed up all of our feelings about our time at the park.

After supper, we dressed the girls in their PJ's and then drove around town to look at the beautiful Christmas lights.

One neighborhood in our city really decorates...

They even make these awesome "Christmas globes" and hang them from all the trees. There are literally blocks of these colorful balls hanging over the streets. It is quite enchanting!

We were curious about the construction of the globes, so went for a close-up...

...alot of beauty.

Daddy came later that evening, so the next morning this little girl was happy to snuggle close to dad as soon as she woke up. And that was the beginning of our family Christmas celebration on the 26th.

Christmas with Friends

Every year, our women's group from church hosts a Christmas party. This year we held the event at our church instead of going to a restaurant. It was alot more work for the planning committee, but it was so much more festive and cozy to be able to be "chez nous" and to enjoy the sweeter ambiance of the yulelog burning in the fireplace! We always have a craft sale and auction, so these were some of the items displayed beautifully on the picnic tables outside. We were so thankful that the weather was cool, but clear for that festive evening.

We started the evening with hot drinks: coffee and tea, wassail, cider, and hot chocolate. And of course, previous to our gathering, we had visited several homes to see their lovely Christmas decor!

Every year the committee decides on a small keepsake to remind us of the event that year. The keepsake for this year was a beautiful Christmas bracelet with an angel charm. Each woman was given a small packet of materials and then instructed how to assemble the bracelet. The bracelet is such a pretty reminder of our special evening together.

So fun to reunite with old friends.

We played a hilarious game. Each woman was given 4 tiny balloons and a pair of panty hose per team. (Four people on a team). We were told to blow up the balloons...

then put them into the legs of the panty hose...

to create a pair of "antlers"...

and the first team that finished and sported the "festive" headgear, and sang "Rudolf the Red-nosed reindeer"...

would have the opportunity to choose their exchange gifts first! Our team won first prize, but everyone had so much fun playing this game together. Laughter is certainly good for the soul!!!

Following a delicious supper, we held our annual auction. The funds we raise are for support of our mission projects, and we were again very successful in meeting our goals, PTL!

It was such a fun evening and a time once again of building great memories with friends! Thanks ladies, for all your hard work. It was a wonderful party!

Birthdays and more....

After spending a day at Knott's Berry farm, M&B came to our house for supper and a "pre-birthday" celebration about ten days ago. Even though the girls were tired from a long day of fun and excitement, their dad had lots of help blowing out the candles on his chocolate cake!

This past weekend, we went to visit J&K. It was fun to spend time alone with little boy, while big brother took a long nap. This little guy is starting to talk now and had so many new things to show us!

Soon big brother woke up, and brought his great imagination into the living room! He and daddy were pretending that they were a train...chugging and whistles and all!

Pretty soon, he came into the kitchen and announced to his mom that he needed a "horn" for his train (so that's the "horn" on his hat!) But pretty soon daddy decided that it could also serve as a Rhino horn, and started to chase him around the room!

Of course, there were also moments of more quiet playtime...

At one point, we heard some noise in the pantry and found this little guy digging in the snack box. (Pure innocence, huh?)

We had such a lovely time together! Now we look forward to the weekend and all the joy that these precious little ones will bring to our Christmas celebration!

In the Christmas mood...

I have been so privileged thru the years to have worked with some wonderful people. I worked with this group of friends for 3 years. About 1 1/2 years ago, we were split up and three of us now work in one building, and the other three work down the street. Because of conflicting schedules, we rarely have the time to go out to lunch together (like we did in the past). But last week, we met together at our favorite Vietnamese restaurant and enjoyed catching up on each others' lives. Although very short, the time together was very sweet!

Our department at work has a yearly contest of "decorating the door." This year we chose a gingerbread house theme.

Thanks to the creative genius of my friend Cindy, (and her Cricut machine!) our door turned out really cute! The hard work was worth all of the fun comments from our patients and fellow-workers.

Our organization hosts a Christmas dinner for all of the staff members. This year was no exception; the food was delicious and the decor (Winter Wonderland) was awesome.

Around the house, reminders of Christmas are everywhere. Putting up the different decorations bring back memories of people and places we've lived...like our friend in Mayville who made this creche for us...

and there is this creche from Africa that brings back years of Christmases spent there...

...and the Advent wreath that my grandfather made for us, over thirty years ago. We are blessed with so many memories and so many friends all over the world. This time of year is such a great time to thank God for all those special people that have touched our lives in so many ways.

Last weekend I invited a couple girls over to do some baking.

We had such a fun time! Laughing, and visiting, and sampling the treats...

I even taught them how to make Krum Kake! They thought it was great fun!

This was the result of our labor...five hours later! It is indeed, "the most wonderful time of the year!"

Last weekend we had a visit from our little boys (and their parents, too!) Watching them play with the tractors, cars and trucks...

...brings back memories of when our boys were little. It is so fun to have the little boys around! They are learning to play together so well.

We did a bit of "farming" while the boys were here. B helped Grampa pick persimmons...

and then insisted on carrying the pail.

in fact, plenty of watering to do! We had such good helper boys!

But after all that hard work, we needed a break, so took some time out for swinging,

relaxing....

J worked so hard that he had to take a brief nap in Andy's hammock.

Then they were off and running, and climbing, and just enjoying being little boys!

And this is my favorite! Aren't they just the cutest little guys in the world???

By this time, we knew that we needed a snack, so off to the kitchen we went...

...and everyone found a little chair to sit on!

J was very interested in my spoon collection, and he and Duke listened patiently to the stories behind many of the spoons.

Then we checked out the Christmas tree. There was such extremely joyful laughter when the lights automatically turned on at 5PM! I will never cease to marvel at the wonder of children at Christmas...

We made one small attempt at a family pic, but little boy was losing patience with all of us!

Soon it was time for PJ's and getting things packed away for the trip back home. But first daddy had to show his son some of the pictures of himself when he was "just a little boy like you."

We had such a wonderful time together and are so very thankful for the blessing of our little boys!

Today is my parents' wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary Dad and Mom!

I am so thankful for the wonderful Godly example my parents have shown me and my family through the years. They have demonstrated love and faithfulness to each other and to God--in all circumstances of life. What a blessing you have been to us! And what a testimony of your love for each other and God.

This recent video is of my dad singing. Even though his memory is failing him, his voice rings strong and clear with the words to all the songs that are dear to his heart.

Thankful for-little girls...

M&B came to our house for Thanksgiving. Actually, they came a couple of days before, so that we could have some fun! On Wednesday, we took the day off of work and did food prep in the morning, then as soon as the little girls woke up from their naps, we headed to Pretend City. What a fun place that turned out to be. First we went to the "farm"...

There were apples and oranges to pick...

gardens to plant...

(Meanwhile, Poppi and Em found a construction zone...)

back on the farm, the crops were coming right along.

That was one very proud little farmer (with her tiger suit on!)

Soon the re-enforcements arrived...

There were strawberries and lettuce to pick...

But there were so many other things to see and do!

Fire Engines and cars--just her size!

Bridges just her height...

and a little house that had furniture and rooms just made for her!

A little kitchen...

and even the bathroom of a perfect size--no step-stools needed for standing by the sink! But there were more places to explore...

Like the big playroom, with games to play...

and soft bowling pins to knock over.

But there was more to see--like fishing in the ponds...

and playing in the sand on the beach.

It was a good time for mom and dad to relax a bit and just enjoy watching the fun.

Em found herself another car again, complete with interesting dials.

Next we were off to the dentist...

...then off to visit the doctor's office.

By this time, we were getting rather hungry, so we stopped by a little restaurant and ordered some food!

But little girl found another little house to explore!

Father and son needed a bit of time to relax and chat...

while mother and daughter headed for the craft room...

...and created butterflies!

Nana and little girl spent some quiet time in the library.

We had a wonderful time at Pretend City and look forward to a repeat performance again someday!

We had a lovely Thanksgiving Day together. (I forgot to take pics of the actual "sit-down" event, but the food was good, and the fellowship was great.) While the women were busy cooking in the kitchen, this little princess had her daddy helping her make playdoh jewelry for the special day.

After a few story books and some lunch, the little girls took a long nap and the adults were able to enjoy a meal together without interruption.

We were privileged to host a couple of guys from church as our Thanksgiving guests this year. After the girls woke up from their naps (and enjoyed their Thanksgiving meal), we were treated to a mini jazz piano concert by D. Fantastic!

A few hours later, we checked out Nana's flowers...

...then bid our farewells. We had such a lovely time. Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

Lefsa Time!

Last weekend we traveled to Pasadena. It was a "3-fold mission"- Jim had a committal service, we wanted to spend time with family & friends, and I was going to participate in a lefsa making party! Since this is truly a labor-intensive job, we started the whole process on Friday evening by gathering our supplies and planning the procedure.

Between the eight of us, we had 55 lbs of potatoes to peel. Yes, that is alot of potatoes!

Then we started to boil them--just right--not too long--so the potatoes would be perfect, not too wet.

While the potatoes were cooking, we enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Karen. Thanks!

By now, the kitchen was becoming a bit steamy, so we opened up some windows and then started mashing all those potatoes.

We followed Penny's recipe, carefully adding the ingredients. After that was finished, we cleaned up the kitchen and organized the four "work stations" so that everything would be ready in the morning. We had to be careful that each grill was plugged into the right outlet, to avoid blowing any fuses. We were so thankful for the men who had color-coded all the outlets to help us in this task. Finally, we were off to our houses until the next morning. I know that Penny and I "dreamed lefsa" all night, and I'm sure that there were others that did as well! After all, we had alot of potatoes to grill the next day!

By 9 o'clock in the morning, we were already busy ricing the potatoes...

...then mixing in the flour

...and finally chilling the "logs" of dough while the grills heated up and the rest of the girls arrived.

First, a lefsa rolling demo by Penny...

...then off to work! With that many ladies working, we all had ideas from "how mom made lefsa" but only a couple of the women had actually done the whole process themselves, so we relied heavily on their expertise. But we also realized that my mom was the only living mother that we could call and ask for help--and I did call--several times! Thanks mom, for your patience and also your expert help!

Everyone was busy rolling, flipping, and grilling those Scandinavian delicacies...

and admiring their lovely pieces of lefsa...

...and of course, the taste!

Incredibly delicious! We are such good cooks!!!

There was also the teaching of the next generation. Mother teaching daughter...

This little girl could hardly wait to finish her soccer game so that she could get back to grilling lefsa! She turned into a real pro by the end of the day!

It was a lot of lefsa...but we have enjoyed every bite!

At noon, we enjoyed another delicious meal, this time prepared by Renae. Thanks! We had so much fun--working, and eating, and laughing, and singing! It was a great party!

After all that lefsa dough was gone, we decided to try our hand at making "Flatbread," so we went back to work again! At least that dough was easier to roll, but it took longer to grill.

Then we popped it in the oven to dry it out.

There were shouts of joy when the last piece of dough was lifted off the grill!

After over six hours of work, we were left to clean up that flour mess--all over the kitchen! It was a good feeling, though, when we looked at the fruit of our labor...

Turning two!

On Sunday, we celebrated Em's second birthday! It was a cold and rainy day, but such a warm celebration we had! We arrived at M&B's house a bit early, and the birthday girl woke up early from her nap, so we had some precious moments with her before all the other guests arrived.

Soon it was time to get all dressed up and pretty...

...mom had to help with the hair.

And there she was, what a pretty little girl- two years old!

Bec had some fun games for the kids to play...

...while we waited for the other guests to arrive. (It was so fun to have her nephews and sister-in-law also visiting for the weekend.)

The boys really miss their daddy (who is overseas right now) and loved it when Uncle M walked in the door and started "rough-housing" with them!

The play looked a bit too tough for this little girl, so she just looked on at all the action...

...and little birthday girl looked longingly outdoors and kept saying, "outside? my bike? my car?" And poor, lonely Sam-dog felt very neglected as he listened to all the action inside the house!

But very soon, birthday girl was distracted by bright and shiney things...

...and began making her own kind of fun.

We had a tiny break for a family photo-op before the other guests arrived.

And then the fun began, as the guests started arriving!

(Big sister decided to take a quiet break first, before the action.)

Auntie Mo organized a game of "stick the butterfly on the flower"

...and birthday girl thought that this was a wonderful game! She placed several stickers on the same petal!

Then out to the garage for some pinata fun (look at big sister...the diva is hard at work in her heels!)

The real action began when the boys started wacking away (someone said the word "candy" and all the kids got excited and became quite anxious to knock the pinata apart).

It finally split apart, and candy went flying everywhere! Soon the little hands were busy scooping up as much of the sweet-stuff as they could.

Elsewhere, birthday girl was more concerned about her bike...

but she did take time off for a brief pic of all the kiddos in their cool shades...

...then the kids were off to better things.

Littlest cousin, just awake from his nap, was rather bewildered by all the noise and action. Mom's arms seemed the safest place to be.

The kiddos loved the little bounce house that was set up in the garage.

But, the show must go on...soon it was time for birthday cake.

It is very important to get a picture of sticky fingers in the cake...

...then sing the birthday song to little girl...

...and then chow-down! Remember that big ball on the top of the cake?

Jayden decided to devour it! He only survived a couple bites, then he said he had had enough. (It was a huge, dense, rice crispy ball)

Big sister loved her piece of chocolate cake...

So did the rest of the guests!

Then it was time for presents...

Late in the afternoon, just after supper, it started to thunder and lightning and the kids were fascinated by the sky...then it started to hail! they were so excited!

The adults took it all in stride.

Then the day was ending and Birthday girl- still her happy little self- is all ready for bed.

When we walked out of the house, our car was covered in hail pellets (notice the white streets in the background also). The trip back home was scarey at times, but we arrived home safely.

It was a wonderful day!

House Call

As noted in the last post, our physician son spent a week of vacation with us. We were delighted to have him here, and enjoyed every walk, every conversation, and every meal together. But we all (especially Mark) missed having his lovely wife here with him.

He was able to catch up on some much needed rest...

enjoy playing some video games...

and a bit of exploration around the town.

After a lovely supper together, we wandered around downtown and looked at some of the pumpkin decor that was set up for the upcoming Halloween block party.

We had a perfect last evening together and cherished each moment. The next morning we sent Mark on his way back east where he was reunited with his wife. Thanks for the visit Mark. Next time we see you, you will be a father!

It's getting to be "that time of year" again...and this year my Christmas cactus decided to start giving blossoms early again. This white cactus is in full bloom already.

I only hope that some of the blossoms are still there come Christmas. But if not, the pink cactus plant next to it is now covered with tiny floral buds and will soon be covered with pink flowers.

Two years ago, I trimmed back my 12 year old pink Christmas cactus plant, and on a whim just pushed several of the discarded stalks into this pot outside on the front porch. Last year, the plant had several flowers; look at it now! It has flourished this year and will be pink with color in the coming weeks.
I am so excited for the Christmas season!

A Wonderful Sunday

Last weekend we had a visit from Lance and Caroline, Jim's cousin's son and family. We have known this young man since birth and are so excited with the way God is working in his life. Now a trained pilot, he and his family are raising support to go out as missionaries.

It was a joy to get acquainted with the whole family.

Little brother had such a fascination with this "turtle" lamp! He also became rather possessive of it!

Sunday was Pastor Appreciation Day, so we honored this man! I praise God for the wonderful husband that He has given me and for the ministry that he has to so many people. He honors God by his life...we honor him for his Kingdom work.

We were so happy that all of our grandchildren and three of our sons could be with us for this day.

E was delighted to be with Uncle Mark

The women from church served a "Taco Bar" for the luncheon; it was delicious!

At clean-up time, a whole chest of ice chunks was dumped on the ground. These little ones flocked around the cubes...

...and who knew that ice could be such a fun toy!!!

Back home that afternoon, littlest boy found these African monkey statues, and started to haul them around.

They are quite heavy (about 6.5 lbs) but he decided that they needed to be moved off the shelf and onto their own "stool."

He was quite pleased with the results of the first fellow ("hear-no-evil")...

...so he went back for #2 ("speak-no-evil")

...and finally he had the third guy with the group ("see-no-evil"). He was very pleased with his group of monkeys and just stood there and looked at them and exclaimed, "Eeash!" (his most popular word at the moment)

Meanwhile, mommy had the older kids doing crafts...

...with intense concentration.

And then they proudly showed off their finished projects.

(This little girl even endured the sticky glue on her fingers!)

And in another corner of the house, daddy was faithfully watching the Vikings game, hoping once agin for a win...

and another simpler song by the little boys! There was alot of activity with 6 little ones under 4!

Then we all tried to listen as Lance shared about his vision and the work that he and his wife would be involved in.

A Misty Day at Laguna Beach

Last weekend Mark came for a week of vacation. Saturday morning at our house was warm and sunny, so we decided to go to the beach that afternoon. Imagine our dismay when we encountered overcast skies and fog when we arrived at Laguna Beach. (sorry Mark!)

We did have a good time just walking on the trails and talking...

...and snapping pictures.

This was the first time in a long time that we've been back to Laguna; for the past 6-7 months, the city has been working on re-building the walking paths and updating the parks. Because the city is known for its artistic flare, they have also added may new sculptures.

This sculpture is actually made from two of the beams rescued from the debris of the Twin Towers--a memorial to 9-11. It was beautiful how they positioned this sculpture with the flag in the background.

Further down the path, we found this sculpture of a whale.

Later, while walking on the beach, the guys found this empty pizza box, "Gina's Pizza Parlor". It reminded Mark of his wife, so very far away.

It was a cool day on the beach, but we did enjoy our warm visit with Mark.

MN trip: Part 4

On Sunday evening, after a long day with friends and family members celebrating Dad's birthday, Jim and I headed for a relaxing evening at my brother's lake home. This was the gorgeous sunrise that greeted us on Monday morning!

I love the clear, crisp fall mornings in MN. Being at the lake makes that feeling even better:-)

The most wonderful news greeted us when we saw my parents on Monday morning...their house had sold! And so began the process of signing papers. After my brother had assisted Dad in signing all the papers, Dad looked at him and said, "So, it's a done deal?" And after a nod from Rayn, Dad stated, "I really like our new place, it's a good deal!" We all laughed with him and agreed!

My parents are very happy in their new home and have made some wonderful friends there. We are so glad that they are safe and warm for the coming winter months.

We had such a wonderful visit with Mom and Dad. I am so grateful for the wonderful parents that God has blessed me with and for their Godly influence in my life.

We were able to see the sugar beet harvest in action. It is amazing to see those hills of beets there on the flat prairie.

My cousin was so kind to let us use her car for the week that we were in MN. This little "buddy" traveled many miles with us, over all those open roads...thanks so much Brenda for the use of your car.

On Sunday afternoon, we had a birthday celebration for my Dad who turns 90 in a few days.

We hosted the event in the dining room on the asst. living facility where my parents now live.

It was wonderful that so many of my cousins were able to come to the party, since my dad is the only survivor in his family. Ninety years old is quite a milestone!

Happy Birthday, Dad! You are a great inspiration to all of us and have always set such a Godly example. We were thrilled that so many family members and friends came to honor you for your special

MN trip: Part 2

We spent a couple of days in Fergus Falls. While Jim was working (Board Meetings) I was able to enjoy the familiar sights around town. The beautiful, crisp fall mornings...

I was able to visit the Cancer Center where I formerly worked. My good friend and I worked side by side for five years...so many good memories that we share.

I also enjoyed a great coffee time together with a couple of friends who used to join me at a Womens' Bible study five years ago.

And once again, we owe many thanks for a wonderful stay in FF to Les and LeAnn. (Les had already left for work, LeAnn and her daughter were headed out of town for a fun shopping trip together with their cousins and sisters.) We are so grateful for these wonderful friends that God has given to us. Thanks so much L&L!

On Saturday morning, we left Fergus Falls and headed north again. We stopped for lunch at my brother's house, then enjoyed a tour of the new house that they are building. It was so fun to see how the plans are taking shape.

They hope to move in about three weeks.

Outside work will have to wait until next spring! Congrats R&G on your new house! It looks great!

Next, we stopped by Dave's house for a short visit. We were glad that we had these few hours together with our siblings on Saturday, since Sunday was very busy and left very little quality time to talk. My sister recently took a new position in Iowa, so we missed her greatly on this trip. We wish her the best in her new job.

Next we headed out to the country. Corn and beet harvest were in full swing.

We love the fresh, clean air of the country.

We finally arrived at my parents new home. Dad even brought out his harmonica that night to serenade us! At age ninety, he still loves his music.

Mom has her apartment nicely set up so that her office is also her living room! She is the only "techy-lady" in their assisted living complex. My sister hinted that she could start giving computer classes, and skyping, etc. You go, Mom!

MN trip: Part 1

Last week we traveled back to Minnesota again. Jim had church board meetings to attend, and I was able to come along to visit family and friends. I was looking forward to seeing the beautiful colors of fall, but unfortunately, we were about one week too late! Due to strong winds the week before, most of the leaves were gone and the trees were bare. We did see a few trees that were still enrobed in the golden colors of fall. So beautiful!

We stayed the first night of our trip with Jim's sister Margarethe. The next morning, we had brunch together, in celebration of her coming birthday. A very Happy Birthday to a most wonderful sister-in-law!!!

It was great to have the great cooking of Perkins Restaurant once again!

Following our meal, we went to visit our niece Julie and see her new home. Little D was so excited to show us his room and all his toys.

Even though the time was short, we were so happy that we could visit with Julie in her new home.

The forecast for that day was "rain showers." And this was the sky that greeted us as we said our farewell to Margarethe.

Soon we were driving through rain, as we headed north.

We were happy that the rains had ended by the time we stopped by one of our favorite MidWest stores- Mills Fleet Farm!

That evening, we stayed with our son Jared and his wife Heidi. It was fun to visit them in their cozy little home. Since Jared has a birthday coming up next week, we decided to start the celebration a bit early.

We were so happy that we could have this early birthday celebration for our youngest son. We are so proud of him and the accomplishments that he has made the past year. Have a wonderful 29th year of life, Bud!

Saturday Visitors

We have been in Minnesota for the past week (new updates from that trip soon), but first we need to share some memories of the weekend before we left. We had a visit from these two little guys--oh yeah, they brought their parents along also! The hats are always a hit with the boys, as well as trucks and cars. Playing with the boys brings back so many memories of playing with our sons when they were little.

About three weeks ago, a new park opened up close to our house, so we went over to check out the play equipment.

One of the features at the park is a type of scavenger hunt called the "Nature Hunt." The kids needed to find all of the objects posted on the wall. It was a fun challenge, and we were finally successful in finding all the objects.

J's favorite ride was this "twirling cup." He went spinning around until he was so dizzy we thought he was going to be sick. But even after that episode, and after playing in several other areas, he came back and wanted to "spin." again.

Of course, little brother tried to do everything that big brother did.

There was also a rock climbing wall. It was actually designed for older children, but J wanted to try it.

Daddy made it to the top, but J gave up and decided to try something different.

I think that Daddy had as much fun at the park as his boys did!

We enjoyed such a fun day together with Jamie and Krista and the boys. Every part of the day was a good memory.

In closing, here is a fun story to share with you:

As we were walking along, J looked up at his grandfather and asked, "Grandpa, are you old?"

A bit surprised at the question, Jim replied, "Yes, I'm old."

J grinned and then stated, "Good! Then you can come and live by us!"

Not understanding the context from which this conversation had come, Jamie looked at his dad and explained that he and J had been walking recently in their neighborhood and J had asked who lived up the street. Seeing that it was a retirement community for people ages 55+, Jamie had told him that "old people live there."

So, smart little boy that he is, J was just checking to see if maybe his grandpa didn't meet the criteria for moving closer by!

A couple of weeks ago, we got a call from Jill saying that they would be visiting our church that day, so we invited them to stop by for lunch. We are always so grateful to reconnect with the young adults that were friends with our sons as they attended high school. It was such a pleasure to meet her husband and to hear how God has been working in their lives as they attended school here in our area.

And, how fun to hear that this young couple is on their way to serve God in Africa in the very near future!

This past weekend we hosted our first "Pastors & Wives get-together." We had a wonderful time together, visiting and sharing concerns and joys of serving the Lord in our churches. We were happy that these two little guys (PK's) could also join us!

Ah yes, the signing of the guestbook! As we have looked back over the comments of people thru the years, it brings a smile to our faces. Not only has God blessed us with so many good friends from all over the world (the guest book proves that!), but we also remember such good memories of those times as we look back through the pages.

We are so grateful for the co-workers that God has sent to work in our church. Each special talent adds so much to the work of the Kingdom, and we are blessed!

Where did the month go????

The same weekend that I attended the WOF conference, our second son and family came to visit for the weekend. On Sunday, while the parents were at the football game, we were privileged to care for our little grand-daughters. Church service with two little ones, and only myself to care for them was rather interesting, but we survived! As soon as we got home from church, it was time for lunch. Em decided to take off her glasses while she was eating...and after tossing them aside, we were amazed once again at those big brown eyes of hers!

This is kind of a crazy picture, but it has a unique story...

I keep this little flashlight on the table beside my bed, and it has always been an object of fastination for two little girls. On this occasion, Em had "stolen" it away from her big sister and was thrilled to have it in her hand. But pretty soon she was holding it up to her eye, then she would remove it and smile at me, then repeat the action once again. (fortunately, she has not discovered how to turn the thing on yet...) It was rather strange behavior until I realized that she has had doctors shining lights in her precious eyes almost since birth! And now she was showing us exactly what flashlights are used for!

Big sister loved treating us to her musical selections; she has been pretty gentle with the ivory keys.

Soon she announced that she needed the book, so she could play more! She actually looked like she could read music, as she studied the pages, and then played a few notes. (We honestly hope that she will become a pianist!)

And while the parents were watching the game, we tuned in on television. We are such faithful Viking fans, in spite of the agony of repeated losses...

After evening baths, mommy and daddy came home, and it was "quiet time"-a book with Poppi...

...some Curious George with daddy. It was a very busy weekend, but so enjoyable!

Last weekend, we spent a day at the Long Beach Arena attending a Dave Ramsey seminar on financial freedom. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, just outside of the Aquarium, where we enjoyed this lovely mural. That whole building has been painted by a talented artist; it looked so real.

We attended the seminar with a large group of friends from our church, and about 12,000 other people from this area! It was not only very informative and inspiring, but also alot of fun. It was the fastest moving 5 hours I've ever spent. Now we just have to put into practice all that we've learned...

Another weekend we were invited to some friends house for a BBQ after church. They recently landscaped and remodeled their back patio and pool area. The place was beautiful. We enjoyed a very relaxing afternoon of visiting, pool, and jacuzzi.

The weather was a bit strange that afternoon, though. We had sun, and clouds and even a little shower of rain. By evening, the clouds built up and we even heard thunder rumbling in the distance. The upside of all those clouds was the most spectacular sunset that I've seen since moving to California.

We watched in awe as God painted the horizon with every hue imaginable.

"O Lord my God, you are very great;

you are clothed with splendor and majesty.

You wrap yourself in light as with a garment;

You stretch out the heavens like a tent and lay the beams of your upper chambers on the waters.

You make the clouds your chariot and ride on the wings of the wind.

I will sing to the Lord all my life;

A Very Full Week

I'm actually pretty far behind on updates--the weeks go by so fast. But they have been full and filled with blessings. The past two weekends we have had rain showers. It still seems early in the year for the rains to begin, but it is fun to see and feel the raindrops again. It reminds me of the many years that we lived in Africa, and how we waited for the rainy season to begin after all those hot, dry months.

With the raindrops come the water puddles...and little feet that splash in the puddles...(oh, OK--Grandmother had fun splashing in the puddles also!)

We also had fun "cooking" in the playhouse...

and searching for treasures in the yard...

Little kids and puppy dogs-- they are such a delightful match!

After visiting our grand-daughters' home, we stopped by the grandsons' house.

It is interesting how, once the little ones come along, all of us find ourselves on the floor in their domain, instead of sitting on chairs and sofas. I think this is a very good thing!

Little brother loves to follow his big brother around and imitate everything he does. It is so cute!

This last weekend I had the privilege of attending the 16th annual Women of Faith Conference, here in SoCal.

My dear friend from work let me join her and her church friends at this event. It is always fun to meet new people and hear their interesting life-stories. We had a wonderful time together and shared great memories.

We were blessed with great seats this year. This photo was taken without telephoto, that's how close we were sitting to the stage!

I always love to listen to the wit an wisdom of Patsy Clairmont. What a ball of energy she is!

The keynote speaker for the Friday evening session was Brenda Werner (wife of Kurt Werner, NFL player)

Worship is just an integral part of the event!

There were many enjoyable things about the conference, but I think that one of my greatest highlights was hearing Amy Grant in concert. She was certainly a "down-to-earth-type-of-person," and not only did I love her singing, but also the words of wisdom that she shared. I hope that her parting words will always stay with me,

"If you are going to sing something, sing something that matters;

if you are going to say something, say something that matters;

make your life matter--for the sake of God's Kingdom."

Visiting Minnesota

Last week, my two oldest sons and I traveled back to Minnesota. The purpose of the trip was to help establish my parents in their new residence, and also help move the rest of their household belongings into storage.

I will never grow tired of seeing the patchwork field designs as we come back to the Midwest. Everything was so still so green and beautful.

Our first night was spent visiting our youngest son and his wife in their new home. It was the first time we met their funny little dog, Duke. (He was injured as a puppy, so has only one eye.) Duke has alot of character!

It was fun to see the way the kids have decorated their little home, very compact and creative!

Sunday, after church and lunch, we rested and then played some games together.

Later, we hiked in a nearby park. (Duke loved being on the trails also!)

We loved being back in the woods! (And we didn't even do too badly with the mosquitoes.)

I will never grow tired of listening to my sons talk about their memories of growing up in Africa together. Their laughter and "tall tales" of childhood are always fun!

On Sunday evening, on our drive to my sister's cabin, we drove past a little lake that was located close to the house that we used to live in back in Minnesota. (sorry about the water spots, the pic was taken thru the car window) Driving around the lake brought back more memories for us...

We arrived at my sister's cabin just as the sun was setting. It was gorgeous!

The lake was so calm, there was no noise from city traffic, we could hear the sound of a loon calling in the distance. Relaxation plus!

We sat outside and talked around the firepit until late, enjoying the sounds of the night- the birds, the bugs, the lake. It was wonderful. (So were the s'mores!)

In the morning we were actually able to see the cute little cabin that my sister has enjoyed the past two years.

On Monday morning, we headed for my parents. They recently moved into an assisted living facility. When we picked them up, we had several boxes stacked in the car, but Dad and Mom snuggled together in the back seat. They were so cute together! We headed for their former house and a day of work.

I guess that I didn't take any pictures of the working process of our trip! The boys were a great help to my brother in hauling furniture and boxes into storage. The house is now empty and on the market. Please pray with us that it will sell quickly, so that the folks (and my brother) will not have the burden of the empty house over the winter months. I spent lots of time sorting and helping mom organize things in her new home. The boys also helped us hang her pictures and curtains and assemble other items. It was so good to have the help. Thanks so much guys! We enjoyed many meals with my parents and listened to many stories of the past. Like dad always said, "we are going down memory lane!"

Great grandparents and their newest grandchild. It is so nice that they have at least one close enough by so that they can enjoy him growing up.

On Tuesday, our neice came to visit us. It was so fun to see her again and to see how much her little guy has grown. (the last time I saw him he was a newborn.) He is such a happy baby and such a charmer!

The folks' new home is very cozy. We were able to find places for everything that mother wanted to have in her new home. They have really down-sized alot, and it has been an adjustment for them, but has been a good move. They have wonderful friends in their building and great food and other activities. It is a good place to live!

Mom uses her wonderful walker to wheel the laundry to the washer and dryer, so very handy.

When we finished up the work at my folks, we headed for Fargo and met many of our family members for supper at Pizza Hut. Our boys got to visit with several of their cousins on this trip, though it was short, we were so happy that it happened!

"Back to School" it's coming...

Our summer activities for church are winding down, but it has been fun to be involved in some of the last final events. This past weekend, we had tickets to an Angels baseball game with a free concert afterwards.

No, we haven't totally converted yet, but we are very proud of the Angels and have really enjoyed going to so many of their games the past year.

Many church groups were in attendance that night because of the MercyMe concert following the game.

These two little "Angels" tried so hard to get themselves and their rally monkeys on the overhead screens, but to no avail! We had alot of fun just watching them enjoying themselves! I must admit that it was one of the most fun times I've ever had at a ballgame. The roving cameras singled out the funniest people in the stands, we had great conversations with our friends, and when things seemed to get really boring--someone would start a "wave" --and that kept going for almost ten minutes at times!

It was a L-O-N-G game! The best part of the game was the final inning (the 12th!!!) when the most action took place, and the Angels finally won. It was great to see the fireworks exploding and hear the fans cheering!

All of the equipment for the band was on flat-bed trucks and ready to be set up on the field. Soon the concert was underway, and the fans started to pour onto the field to be closer to the musicians.

The band was very good, but we only stayed for about half of the concert, since they had started so late and Jim had to preach the next day.

On Sunday afternoon, we joined the youth group and several other families for an afternoon at the beach. It was very windy, but the park provides large fire pits for grilling and cooking.

With those awesome tongs, Jay was able to roast a lot of hotdogs at one time!

We also enjoyed a walk on the beach, and some enjoyed swimming...

...until the lifeguards warned people to get out of the water because of the riptides, strong currents and stingrays.

This past week we enjoyed having Marilyn's cousin B come to visit. She drove across the country with her daughter J to help her get settled in her new apartment. Since she will be attending school close by us, we were very excited to welcome them to SoCal. After checking out the downtown attractions one evening, we ended up at Yogurtland for dessert.

Although we had never met before, we instantly knew that we were with family! We had so much fun getting acquainted and look forward to many more times together in the years to come. Welcome to SoCal, J and we hope you have a great school year!

Harvest 2011

On Friday evening, we joined thousands of other people from the area in attending the Harvest Crusade with Pastor Greg Laurie, held at the Angels Stadium.

It was a gorgeous evening and we arrived early enough so that we got pretty good seats. (this was our view)

We enjoyed sitting with Andy and Rachelle, our co-workers.

There were several musical artists featured that night: Kutless, Dave Crowder Band, Crystal Lewis...and the singing was exuberant!

We don't know how many people were in attendance that night, but the stadium was almost filled!

We also got to hear from Bethany Hamilton, the young girl who lost her left arm in a shark attack while
surfing. She has an awesome testimony of what God can do in a life that remains committed to Him, no matter what happens.
And of course, the highlight of the night was the message by evangelist Greg. We praise God for the impact that this man continues to have on this area and for the many people whose lives were changed this past weekend through the message of God's redeeming grace.

Little Reminders

We had the privilege this past weekend of taking care of our grand-daughters while their daddy was working and their mommy was competing in a triathlon. And we enjoyed every minute of it!

We read lots of books, some of them many times.

We had lots of music, also some singing (and also some squabbling over the piano...)

Big sister was a big help to Poppi with the yard work.

We had many memorable moments...and we survived! These are very busy and active little girls!

After they left, the house became very quiet once again. I was reminded of something that my mother told me many years ago when my own boys were little. After we had left her house, she found "little reminders" all over the house of the kids having been there. As I was cleaning up, I found this little chair pushed up close to my cactus plant. One little girl loves butterflies, and she was trying very hard,,,

...to touch this pink butterfly that was just out of her reach.

She had also been given a quarter ("this is my coin," she said) and was planning to put it in her piggy bank when she got back home. But, she was concerned that little sister might take the coin before she left, so she decided to hide it. She carefully put it under her stool next to the bathroom sink.

And that was right where I found it. We just love those "little reminders" and the tiny fingerprints on the windows...they are such good reminders that we are loved by some very special little people!

Wedding Celebration

A couple of weeks ago, we attended the wedding of the daughter of some dear friends of ours.

This young lady actually lived with us for a year while she was attending school in Africa (and later, two of our sons lived with her family), so our families are very close. The wedding was actually part of the morning worship service. The groom's father gave the sermon that day, and the bride's father married the couple--truly a family affair!

K was envious of the flowers that the sisters of the bride had in their hair, so they decided to "decorate" her hair also.

After the Reunion

After the reunion was over, we said our good-bys to the Rocky Mountains, and headed east to spend several days visiting family and friends in the Billings area.

Being the farm girl that I am, I insisted that we stop for a photo of this wheat field.

I will always love the smell of a freshly combined grain field, an Alfalfa field of hay, a newly plowed field, the sight of the straight rows of a cornfield...

...and don't forget the cattle and the farmland.

We were treated like royalty by our good friends Jan and Dave. We shared so many good memories and also great food! Thanks so much for your hospitality, dear friends.

We also were able to spend a morning with Jim's cousin Bruce. He set aside time to visit with us and also give us a tour of his place of work.

So many trucks and engines...I kept thinking about how much fun my grandson would have had if he had been along with us- he loves trucks and fire engines (yes, we saw one of those also!)

We stayed a night with my cousin Ruth. Such a great time of fellowship we had together. We are so thankful for the heritage that we share, both as sisters in Christ, and also as cousins.

M&B were housed with another cousin...so many family members! We are very blessed!

We were so happy to spend some time visiting with Jim's aunts. For all of our lives, this woman and her two sisters have been such a support to us in our ministry. We are so grateful for the many prayers and other ways that they have helped us. I remember the time that we visited them in their home and our son was the age that his daughter is now...what a fun time we had introducing them to the next generation. (and K loved the fascinating wheelchair--what a great place to sit and play with her Great, great Aunt!)

Airports are always interesting places. This one had a great place for the kids to play (also parents).

In this age of cell phones, I wondered, "How do you explain the concept of a pay phone?"

It's a bit out of focus, but this little one was so proud of the fact that she was sitting in the place that her big sister had been sitting only a couple of minutes before. The rivalry has begun!

It was a great trip, and the kids were real troopers the whole time. But they did get tired...

...and so did Daddy.

We treasure the memories of our trip, but we were all very happy to be able to sleep once again in our own beds!

We were so happy to be with so many of the Erickson family members at our recent reunion. It was a great time to catch up on each others' lives and also renew relationships.

Also a time to update the family tree...

...to play games, both indoor

...and outside.

A time to visit with a cousin whom you haven't seen in twenty years...

...to meet cousins that you may not have seen for a long time!

Lots of kids and adults enjoyed the new rock climbing room that was recently built.

Lance braved the roads and traveled alone by motorcycle several hundred miles, just to be together with family.

Author cousin Al shared about the writing of his books and even held a book signing one afternoon.

...and plenty of photo opps. We have so many great memories of the family reunion. And let's not forget the Saturday morning picture-taking time!

The hour was very long for so many of the little ones, but they survived. After all, picture taking of large groups is just part of being an Erickson!

We thank God for the heritage that is ours and pray that all who come behind us will also be faithful to the Lord and to His Holy Word. May God continue to bless our family.

Family Time @ the Reunion

We were blessed with beautiful weather and a great view while at our family reunion (seems hard to believe that it is over a week ago now!)

Since our last reunion, this new gymnasium and Rec center has been built.

Our family stayed in the lower quarters of the cabin on the right.

E thought she was pretty cool when she got to wear her Auntie's clip-on shades!

The little girls loved to go down to the river early in the morning and throw stones in the water.

There were always plenty of rocks to climb on also!

Curious George came along to Montana and even learned how to climb on the "climbing walls."

And he loved the view!

E enjoyed getting acquainted with Uncle Brent.

Who could ever resist that sweet smile?

Mom played "water balloons" with the little girls before all the big kids took over the field.

K bonded well with her new cousin

M&B were able to even get a hike in while at camp.

One afternoon we had a little picnic in our room before the girls had their naps. (they were both teething and not feeling the best, but they were such good troopers and still managed to spread their cheer around to all.)

On the Road

Last week, we traveled to Montana for the Erickson reunion. This event takes place every 4-5 years, so we love to plan for it and try to encourage many of our family members to attend, if possible. The last reunion, only Jim and our youngest son Jared were able to go; this year, Jim and I were accompanied by M and his family. Since we had to be at the airport quite early, we just took the little girls out of their beds and popped them into the car seats and headed down the road. (Wouldn't it be great if we could all travel in our PJ's?)

K is easily entertained by her DVD player...

E just likes to entertain us! Both girls are such good travelers, and of course, we get plenty of comments and questions from people regarding E's cute little glasses.

We never cease to marvel at the beauty of the landscape below us as we cross this great land of ours.

While the guys went to get the rental cars, we ladies had to look for things to do. While exploring the luggage area, we came across these statues. (The colors in this horse were created by thousands of beans!)

Next, we found this beautifully painted Mountain ram (little E called all the animals puppies ;-) And don't you just love all those brightly colored flags?

Eventually the guys came with the rental cars and we were once again on our way, this time going in two different directions. M&B headed west to stay with a cousin, and we stayed in town.

What a joy it was to stay with Matt and Kristin. We have known this young lady since she was just a little girl--attending school in France--and later in Africa. Such a blessing to see how God is using her and her family in the ministries He has given them. Thanks friends for a lovely time together and such delicious food!

On Thursday morning, we hit the road again...is there any wonder why they call this "Big Sky Country?!"
We could literally feel the tension leaving our bodies as we breathed the clean country air, and drank in the wide-open spaces, and enjoyed having the roadway basically to ourselves. Finally--so far away from the "concrete jungle"-- we felt like we were on vacation!

In Great Falls, we met a bunch of Jim's Sunwall cousins at a local restaurant.

The time went by way too fast, but we were thankful that we got to spend at least a little bit of time together!

A few hours later, we arrived at Bean Lake...and we knew that we were close to our destination!

We always marvel at the flat land that so suddenly changes to the mountains, and then suddenly, we arrive at the lovely setting where the camp is located.

Fun Anticipation

Last weekend we were able to see our oldest grandson play soccer. We arrived early so that we could see him during the "warm-up" exercises.

It was a very hot day, so the kiddos had frequent water breaks!

Little brother was also present...checking out the field and anticipating the day he will also be out there kicking the ball around!

He enjoyed giving this little girlfriend a few gentle tips on soccer.

And then the games began! (That's our little star, right there in the center.)

After the game was over, J insisted that he wanted to ride in our car. So here we are, one very excited and happy little guy! (And of course the grandparents were very happy to hear the chatter and comments that never ended!)

This picture reminds me so much of a little collectable that my mother has sitting on her windowsill. It shows two little farm boys with a wagon between them and the caption underneath states, "Are you pushing or pulling?"

Pure joy!

And pure delight!

Then it was time for some pizza.

And a bit of fun imagination...

and more imagination!

And then Uncle Jamie led the whole gang in a backyard game of soccer! It was such an enjoyable time together as a family.

And now we are off to Montana for more family fun!

Summer has Arrived (part 2)

J&K and their boys came to visit later in the afternoon. After several hours in the swimming pool earlier in the day, this little guy was thrilled to walk into his uncle's house and find that the visitors had sons and lots of cars and trucks!

He occupied himself for a long time, just playing and imagining all kinds of wonderful scenarios.

But soon, that novelty wore off and he ventured outside where the rest of the boys were playing. So what happens when you have one car, and four little boys who want to be the driver? You take turns, right?

Well, maybe...

And you try to be patient until it is your turn behind the wheel again...

Or, you just chill and patiently enjoy the view around you--like little brother! (Now who knew he was merely lurking in the grass, waiting for his big moment in the car!)

When extra manpower arrives, you take advantage of it! Oh yes, you try to be kind to the woman and bring her along on the ride, too!

Then you just sit back and enjoy the ride.

But if you take your hands off the wheel and get distracted by other things, the youngest fellow will certainly move in on your territory!

He'll check things out and see if he likes the vehicle...

Then, he will take control!!! And he'll love every moment of it!

Finally, it was time for an ice cream cone snack. With seven little kids, and 108 degree heat, the kitchen floor seemed to be the best place for the kids to have their "ice cream cone party." These two cousins enjoyed each and every bite!

On July 4th, we enjoyed a nice quiet day together with Chuck and Penny. Since it was Penny's birthday only two days prior, we celebrated again on Monday. Have a wonderful birthday year, dear Penny!

Summer has Arrived! (part 1)

After many months of cooler weather, we finally have the hot days of summer. So that means a trip to the beach of course! (We like to go later in the day when we can actually find a spot to park and also a place to relax on the beach.)

We love the relaxing sound of the seagulls...

...and the sound of the waves.

We loved watching the surfers, waiting for the perfect wave...

...and the fishermen, waiting for the perfect catch!

While we were sitting on the beach, a couple of guys flew overhead in their ultra-lite planes.

What an awesome feeling that must be, hanging there in mid-air! And what a view!

On Saturday, we went to visit our son and his family. The day was very hot (it felt just like our hot season in Africa!) but we still enjoyed being outside. B's brother and family were visiting, so we were able to enjoy somebody else's grandkids! This delightful young man latched on to Jim and called him "Mr Grandpa" for the rest of the afternoon.

Every year my friends from church organize a "night out" when we can all celebrate my birthday. I am so blessed to have so many wonderful friends both near and far! This is Rachelle (my co-PW). We are so happy to have her and husband as our closest neighbors.

Celebrations

Sunday was a family day. Jim was able to have his two oldest sons here to honor him for Father's Day. And since my birthday was in the middle of the work week, my family here honored me by celebrating my birthday a couple days early. Bec used her creative skills by baking and decorating the birthday cake.

I had to work on my birthday. But when I walked into my office that morning, this is the beautiful bouquet of flowers that my friend and co-worker had placed on my desk. What a pleasure to gaze at these beautiful Hydrangeas for the past few days. I had a lovely birthday!

During this week of sadness and loss (two deaths and funerals in one week) we are thankful for the happy moments...times we can spend with our family and friends and rejoice in the smiles and squeals of laughter! Last Saturday, we spent time with two of our sons and their families.

Thirty-nine years ago today, in a small country church, we were married. Seems hard to believe that it was that long ago...the time has really flown by! We decided to celebrate this evening by a dinner out, followed by a baseball game. So we started out at Olive Garden...

Arriving at the Angels Stadium, a great sunny afternoon (after a morning of drizzle and overcast skies)...

he was dressed for the part...

and so was she!

We found out that the Angels Team is only a little over a decade older than our marriage!

We always marvel over the half-empty stands when the game begins...

and how it fills up around the third inning!

Unfortunately, our team lost, but we had a good time at the game.

Happy Anniversary to us! Life has only gotten better with the years!

Yesterday we celebrated Memorial Day. Maybe it is because I lived overseas for so many years, I don't know, but I always seem to get a "catch" in my throat each time I see our beautiful flag. As the song says, "I'm proud to be an American!"

We went to a nearby park and cemetery to commemorate this special day. So many graves were decorated by flags and plants. It was a good time of reflection...freedom is not free!

This is the first year that we were able to attend the special Memorial Day service held here in our city. Not only did we honor the service men and women who have passed on, but we also had a special time in the service to honor those who are still living. A soloist sang each of the songs from the 5 branches of service, and the guests who had served in that branch of the military stood and sang their song together with her, as we applauded them. It was especially moving to see an elderly man and his uniformed grandson stand together as the anthem for the Air Force was sung. Thanks to all of our service men and women who pledge to guard our freedoms, regardless of the cost to their personal lives.

what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

Sunday Celebration

On Sunday, we celebrated Jim's birthday (again) with our church family by a special pot-luck luncheon after the church service. We were so happy that our family here could be at the service and also join in the celebration. Of course, the best gift to Grandpa was his grandchildren!

Several little girls at church also enjoyed our little Em!

A special thanks to all the women who organized and served the luncheon, plus the ice cream sundae bar (Jim's favorite!) after the meal.

Every one of the kids took a turn in the rocking chair-the same one that their grandma sat in as a little girl!

K found her uncle's big shoes...

And B enjoyed playing with his uncle again.

This is such a fun age of imagination! J loved playing with the wooden toys that his great, great grandfather made over 35 years ago. (I love how he now has names for all the vehicles when we play cars and trucks!)

One week ago

One week ago, we were getting ready to travel back home again after a lovely time together with our son and daughter-in-law. In the process of packing his bag, Jim noticed that the strap was hanging by only a few threads, so Gina offered to "suture the bag." It certainly is handy to have an ER doc in the family! Thanks, Gina, the bag repair was great and traveled well!

Thanks Mark and Gina for a wonderful week and such a relaxing time with you.

A week ago, this was the scenery along the roadside. We enjoyed the clear fresh air, the lush green trees, and so many fewer cars on the freeways.

Since we had plenty of time to explore this airport, we took advantage of it.

We even found some southern hospitality and charm there...

There is nothing like a nice rocking chair to just relax the spirit! Have a great week.
